A tough challenge!

After a week off we returned to Challenge Cup action with a game against Rainham Kenilworth of Division 1, which is 2 divisions higher than ourselves. This game was always going to be an extremely tough game against opponents who were flying high in Division 1. Rainham are undefeated this season and have won all their games, bar 1 draw in their division and sit in second place, only 2 points off the top.

To be honest I want the boys to be challenged and tested to aid their development, so I was looking forward to the game and seeing the boys pit themselves against good quality players. I told the boys that today was going to be an examination of different aspects of their game, that haven’t been tested so far this season. I told them that they were going to need 110% effort and commitment to enable themselves to stay in the game and be competitive. If they showed this, then I would be proud of them whatever the score and result today.

The game kicked off and I was pleased to see the boys start with intensity and not stand off Rainham and allow them time to play. You could see that Rainham possessed quality on the ball but we were defending well, holding a good defensive shape and Rainham were unable to play through us. The game ebbed and flowed and then Rainham took the lead through our first defensive mistake! However, the boys didn’t let this get them down and battled hard until right before half time where Rainham grabbed a second. This was tough on the boys as although we weren’t seeing as much of the ball as normal, we were defending well and restricting Rainham to very few chances. Indeed we went close with a couple of opportunities ourselves and it would have been interesting to see if the dynamic of the game would have changed if we had scored.

The second half kicked off and I was worried that we would tire as the second half wore on, due to the way Rainham were moving us about. This did become a factor and the last 15 minutes we were definitely on the back foot, having pushed hard to get a goal back, but we were unable to get the breakthrough. Rainham then added a slightly fortuitous goal with a sliced shot that spun into the air towards our goal and then dipped just under the crossbar!

The game ended with us losing 3-0 and this being our 1st defeat of the season. Considering the 2 division gap, then I think that this was a great performance from the boys and testament to how they are developing as a team. I was especially proud of the boys and the amount of work they put into the game. If we play like that then for the rest of the season, then we will have a very good chance of not only getting promotion, but also winning the league title. We have 9 league games left and I believe that we have the ability to win all those games and I have set the boys this challenge to keep them going.

Very proud of all the boys today and it is hard to pick anyone out for special praise in a performance like that. Jude was man of the match for his tireless running and work rate. Also a special mention to Alfie Nash who was playing his first game for us and slotted into defence today to replace Joe, who had hurt his knee. Alfie did really well and slotted in seamlessly in a very hard game to make your debut in!

Well done boys, you did yourselves, the team and the club proud!
